Winks asked to play in Tottenham clash after source’s update – pundit

Kevin Phillips insists Harry Winks will still leave Tottenham this summer despite playing for the club last week

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the Englishman’s future.

Football Insider revealed on 29 July, Winks is in talks to leave Spurs for a Premier League rival this summer.

The midfielder, 25, started in Tottenham’s UEFA Conference League loss to Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday.

Nuno Espirito Santo has given the midfielder the green light to leave and a Spurs source has updated to Football Insider the club want a permanent transfer rather than a loan.

Winks has slipped down the pecking order at Tottenham and is set for a fringe role if he stays.

Phillips insists Wink’s outing on Thursday was nothing more than an attempt to put him in the shop window.

“Every player needs minutes on the pitch,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“If someone is going to buy him, they need to make sure he’s fit.

“I also think there is an aspect of ‘he’s in the shop window now, not that it went to plan on Thursday.

“Whether it’s a loan or a permanent move, he needs to go.

“If he is wanting to go, I wouldn’t be surprised if he asked to play.

“He probably wants to show everyone what he can do.”

Winks had made 174 appearances for Tottenham during his career.

He has been at the club since 2002.
