The consensus seemed to be that despite a disastrous string of results since he was appointed, former Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom would get next season to sort things out at Leeds.
The consensus was wrong.
Football Insider broke the sensational news on Wednesday that Leeds are set to sack Heckingbottom, with the only decision left to be made whether it’s going to happen now or at the end of the season.
The report claims that Leeds are already drawing up a list of replacements for the manager who took over from Thomas Christiansen.
It might seem harsh on Heckingbottom, but facts don’t lie.
Leeds have won two games since he took over, lost six and drawn four.
They’ve actually been worse under Heckingbottom than they were under Christiansen, and worse, they seem to be going backwards.
At least Christiansen had a great start to the season.
There’s been no evidence that Heckingbottom is capable of turning things around and some fans might say “we told you so!” after they questioned his credentials in the first place.
Heckingbottom joined from Barnsley, a team struggling at the wrong end of the Championship table.
Since he’s taken over Leeds would be in the same drop zone on their form since the turn of the year.
The big question was whether he could be trusted to spend the millions from Andrea Radrizzani this summer and craft a team that could mount a promotion challenge next season.
Radrizzani has obviously decided this isn’t the case and is ready to swing the axe before or at the end of the season.
With the news out, we’d now imagine that Heckingbottom will leave his post sooner rather than later, and Leeds fans will be desperate for a big name to take over, or at least someone with the credentials their club deserves.
After disastrous decisions with first Christiansen and then Heckingbottom, Radrizzani must make sure that he gets the next one right.
