Wolves make emphatic decision on offer for 24-year-old - report

By Danny Wright

Sheffield United have had a bid turned down by Wolves for midfielder Conor Coady, according to a report

The Mirror claimed in their live transfer blog on Thursday [07:38am] that the West Midlands side decided to emphatically reject the offer that had previously been confirmed by Blades boss Chris Wilder.

Coady had spent the 2013/14 season on loan at Bramall Lane during the earlier part of his career while he was still at Liverpool, and Wilder, 49, had made it clear that he was planning to bring him back to Yorkshire this summer.

“Yes, we have put a bid in,” said Wilder after his side’s Carabao Cup win against Walsall on Wednesday night, as quoted by the Mirror in their transfer blog.

“What it is will remain between the two clubs. Yes, it’s ambitious. But we like to think we are an ambitious club.”

Coady has since emerged as one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s key players at Molineux and he was handed the captain’s armband while playing at centre-back in Saturday’s Championship opener against Middlesbrough.

The former Liverpool player is seen as a fan favourite by the Sheffield United supporters having made 50 appearances across all competitions for them in his loan spell, scoring six goals and supplying four assists in the process.

Football Insider Verdict

No one can really blame Wilder for having a go. The Blades have just made their way back into the Championship and will still be on the lookout to improve their squad before the transfer window closes. Coady is clearly a player who is liked by Sheff United and it remains to be seen whether or not they will contact Wolves with a second bid for him. However Wilder admitted himself that his opening bid was “ambitious”, so that means he may have only just been testing the waters, or he isn’t prepared to go any higher. Either way it’s unlikely that Wolves will let him go. They don’t really need the money due to their rich owners and Nuno clearly has the ex-Liverpool man in his plans.
