Wolves may have secured signing of the season as bargain deal agreed for ‘intelligent’ star with ‘big talent’

Wolves have agreed a cheap deal with Marseille for the signature of former Man United talent Angel Gomes.

Less than a year ago, the likes of Tottenham were attempting to prise Gomes away from Marseille, with the midfielder highly rated.

The 25-year-old has struggled for minutes of late, however, and is now set to finally make his return to England.

Much of the summer at Molineux has been spent dealing with an outgoing, as Jorgen Strand Larsen looks to secure a move to Crystal Palace.

Football Insider revealed this week that Lassine Sinayoko is among the strikers Wolves are interested in, as the Norway international finally nears an exit.

Wolves agree bargain deal for Angel Gomes

Gomes emerged through Man United‘s academy, making 10 appearances for the Red Devils between 2019 and 2020.

The midfielder left Old Trafford at the end of his contract, joining French side Lille on a free transfer and immediately spending the 2020-21 season on loan with Boavista in the Portuguese top flight.

There, Gomes thrived and found himself in the Lille team upon his return in the 2021-22 season.

Three strong seasons in Ligue 1, even impressing enough to make his England debut in 2024, would attract the interest of Marseille, who the midfielder joined on a free transfer last summer.

The move has not worked out, however, with Roberto De Zerbi opting for different options in recent weeks.

And now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have agreed a deal to sign Gomes with the Premier League club set to sign the 25-year-old on loan with an option to buy.

In what is undoubtedly a coup, decision-makers at Molineux are set to pay a package worth less than £7million to sign Gomes.

Gomes ‘loves the game’, he can be superb for Wolves

Gomes has scored four goals for Marseille this season, and by no means has he played poorly, but there is an argument that De Zerbi has been misusing him.

The 25-year-old has been deployed in a more advanced position, while the best points of his career have come in a slightly deeper role.

The 2023-24 season was a superb one for Gomes, and it often saw him deployed in a double pivot.

When Lee Carsley took over as the England manager in the wake of Gareth Southgate‘s departure, he selected the midfielder and paired him with Declan Rice at the base of the midfield.

Wolves, under Rob Edwards, have often opted for a midfield three, which could well bring out the best of both worlds from Gomes.

Speaking in 2024, Lille manager Paulo Fonseca was full of praise for the midfielder. “Angel is maybe the most intelligent player I have in my team,” he said.

“He understands faster than the others everything about the game; he loves the game. He loves to learn, and he is a player with big skills, big technique.

“He is a player who, under pressure, finds it is not easy to steal the ball off him and who discovers the space so easily. He is young, he has a big talent.

“I believe with the right coach, with the right project, with the right game for him, he can have the possibility to have a big step in his career.”

Incredibly, the next step of that project looks set to come in the Championship, where Gomes’ quality will surely stand out emphatically.
