Wolves want Rangers to pay sizeable fee to sign Nasser Djiga permanently

Rangers are set to find it “difficult” to sign Wolves loanee Nasser Djiga permanently this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League side are set to make a decision regarding the centre-back’s future when he returns from his spell at Ibrox at the end of the season, and could even give him a chance to impress in their team if they are relegated to the Championship.

Sources say that the Gers’ hopes of being able to strike a permanent deal for the 23-year-old are likely to be slim due to the fact that he is tied down to a long-term contract until 2030, while he could also command a sizeable asking price.

Rangers’ transfer plans are set to see them target reinforcements in the centre of their defence, as Danny Rohl’s squad has been stretched thinly in that area this term.

Nasser Djiga re-vitalised at Ibrox in recent weeks

Djiga had initially struggled for form in the early stages of his loan spell with Rangers, but he has come into his own with his displays in recent weeks.

The Burkina Faso international found himself in and out of the team in the early part of 2026, but he has fought back to earn a spot in the starting XI in each of the Gers’ last two games.

He was on the pitch for 105 minutes of the penalty shootout defeat to Celtic in the qaurter finals of the Scottish Cup, and then helped his team to back-to-back clean sheets in the 1-0 win away at St Mirren last weekend.

Djiga has kept John Souttar out of the team in recent weeks, as the pair go toe to toe to try and become the regular partner to Emmanuel Fernandez at the centre of Rohl’s back four.

Rangers have some big games ahead of them in the upcoming league split, as they continue to battle Celtic and Hearts for the Scottish Premiership title, and Djiga could continue to play an important role.

It is clear that he has won Rohl’s trust back with his performances of late, but his efforts have done little to change the fact that a permanent stay appears to be out of reach.

Rangers to look elsewhere for centre-back addition

Football Insider revealed earlier in March that Rangers will add at least one new centre-back to their group ahead of next season, as it has proven to be a problem area for them this season.

Derek Cornelius has been banished from the first-team squad by Rohl, leaving Fernandez, Djiga, Souttar and Dujon Sterling as the only senior players capable of playing in the central role.

That number is set to drop even further when Djiga returns to his parent club, and as a result, the position has become a “key priority” to be strengthened this summer.

Rohl and Co. are keen to avoid relying on loan signings again in the defence for next season, and new permanent acquisitions will be sought.

However, with a move to keep Djiga looking unlikely, any incomings will have to come from outside the current crop of players.
