‘Wolves will be pleased by Matheus Cunha’s confession after deal agreed’

Matheus Cunha only signed his Wolves contract in February but has confirmed he wants to leave the club in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Speaking to The Guardian (30 March), he said: “We’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

Football Insider subsequently revealed on Tuesday (1 April) that Liverpool are considering Cunha as a potential Darwin Nunez replacement, while Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle are also keen.

The Brazil international will be available for £62.5million via a release clause inserted into his new contract with Wolves.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed Wolves will actually be pleased with Cunha despite his public comments.

‘Wolves should be thanking Cunha’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness conceded fans will be “disappointed” but insisted Wolves will thank Cunha for his conduct.

The forward has hit 15 goals in 29 games across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign with Vitor Pereira’s side set to survive relegation to the Championship.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Wolves will be pleased that he decided to extend his contract.

“That probably increased his value, which has always been the case when you sign a long-term deal.

“It’s put Wolves in the driving seat over the transfer.

“Cunha has been vocal, which will be disappointing to a lot of fans – but Wolves are in a good position because he’s signed the contract.

“They have got a say going forward, and they have put themselves in the position to maximise the value.

“They know he is going to go – but they should be thanking him, as much as anything else.”

Tottenham will have to pay ‘£40m’ to land Ait-Nouri

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (21 March) Tottenham would need to pay a “huge” £40million fee to secure the signing on Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves.

Spurs have joined the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United in the pursuit of the 23-year-old.

Ait-Nouri will have just one year remaining on his contract in June – although Wolves reserve the option to extend his deal by an extra year.
