Woodman’s weekend error won’t stop Celtic transfer as source reveals talks update – Whelan

Noel Whelan insists Freddie Woodman’s weekend mistake won’t stop Celtic from making a move for him this summer.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the Newcastle goalkeeper’s future.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Celtic are among a cluster of clubs who are keen on signing the former England Under-21 international.

It is understood Celtic have enquired about Freddie Woodman during discussions with Newcastle over Kristoffer Ajer.

Woodman, 24, spent last season on loan at Championship playoff losers Swansea City.

He started Saturday’s playoff but conceded a penalty in the first half after bringing down Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo in the box.

It was a big mistake on a massive stage but Whelan insists this won’t have put off interested clubs.

“At that age, he has so much ahead of him,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“24 is still young, you’re not even in the best years of your career yet. He’s made massive strides this season.

“No doubt there are people looking at him. There aren’t many good young English goalkeepers around.

“He’s one of the young good ones out there who can improve. Goalkeepers are always in the spotlight because you can make or break a game by making poor decisions.

“He did that at the weekend. He thought he could get there against a player who is very quick.

“He’ll bounce back, he looks like he has a good head on his shoulders. That mistake will not stop clubs including Celtic from wanting to sign him. Absolutely not.”

Woodman has spent the last two seasons on loan with Swansea.

He was part of the England side that won the Under 20s World Cup in 2017.
