Reliable journalist: World Cup finalist in talks after Newcastle midfielder fails medical - report

LA Galaxy midfielder Nigel de Jong is in talks with Galatasaray following the failed medical of Cheick Tiote, according to a report.

Turkish website Goal claim the club want to add a star midfielder to the side after the possible collapse of Tiote’s transfer, and de Jong is keen on the move.

Tiote was set to leave Newcastle for Turkey on Monday, but a problem in his left lateral meniscus could have scuppered the deal.

LA Times journalist Kevin Baxter confirmed on his personal Twitter account that there have been talks between de Jong and Galatasaray but claimed the 31-year-old Dutch midfielder is yet to travel to Istanbul.

Tiote has also been rumoured with moves to China and the United Arab Emirates this summer, as he looks to leave Newcastle before the transfer deadline on Wednesday.

Tiote has just 12 months remaining on his St. James’ Park deal, after signing with the north-east outfit in 2010 for £3.5million.

Tiote has made over 150 appearances for the club, but struggled for consistency and fitness since sustaining a serious knee injury in February 2015.

De Jong is a Premier League winner, having been a part of the Man City team in 2012.

He played in Manchester for three years between 2009 and 2012 before leaving for AC Milan, and arrived at LA Galaxy in February.

He also played in the 2010 World Cup final for Holland, when they were beaten by Spain 1-0 after extra time.

In other Newcastle transfer news, a £1.75m deal has been agreed after an approach from the Magpies.
