'They worry me' - Paul Merson predicts where Tottenham will finish in 17/18 PL season
By Danny Wright
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has predicted that Tottenham will achieve a third-place finish in the 2017/18 Premier League.
Spurs were runners-up to Chelsea last time out, but Merson has made it clear that a move away from White Hart Lane could have an adverse effect on Mauricio Pochettino’s men, and if they were to have stayed at their historical home, the 49-year-old would have backed them for the title.
Tottenham notably struggled at Wembley in their home European fixtures last term, and that seems to be the “worry” for the Sky Sports pundit, who has also predicted that his former side Arsenal will finish sixth.
Although Spurs are the only team in the Premier League not to have signed a player since last season ended, Merson is still in the belief that they have one of the best squads in England.
“If Tottenham were playing at White Hart Lane I’d have them as champions. They’ve got the best team, they haven’t had to buy anybody. They will miss Walker surging forward, but Kieran Trippier is a great replacement,” said Merson on the Sky Sports website.

“I just think of them playing away from home for 38 games; they didn’t have the greatest away record last year but had a superb home record.
“They worry me in that sense, but I still think they could finish third. They do need a couple more squad players before the end of the window, however.”
Tottenham will kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to newly-promoted Newcastle on Sunday.
They will potentially travel to the St. James’ Park without the injured Trippier, meaning that Pochettino could be left with an untimely problem in the right-back area of his squad.
Spurs finished seven points behind champions Chelsea last term, but many would agree that their squad was perhaps the strongest, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen firing on all cylinders for the north London side all season long.
In other Tottenham news, Stan Collymore has also predicted where Spurs will finish this season.
