Alan Hutton believes James McCarthy would be a “brilliant signing” for Celtic, amid reports linking the 29-year-old with a Celtic Park move.
The former Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insisted Neil Lennon would be “over the moon” if he could get a deal for the midfielder over the line.
Glasgow-born McCarthy is believed to be a big Celtic fan and because of this the Hoops are confident they can win the race for his signature, according to 90Min.
Hutton is cautious about Celtic’s chances however, siting the finances around the deal as a potential stumbling block.
“I think it would be a good signing, if they get him in I think it would be a brilliant signing actually,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Again, wages and things like this could be a problem. He’s 29, so it would be a great addition if they can get him, it would definitely make them stronger.
“If they could get that one over the line, they’d be over the moon with that. We’ll have to wait and see, I’m sure Lennon will be working really hard but finances could be a problem but if anybody could stretch it, I think Celtic could.”
McCarthy joined Palace for £8million from Everton last summer. He impressed during a disappointing season for the Eagles, shaking off his injury woes to rack up 35 appearances in all competitions at Selhurst Park.
The 40-time Ireland international was born in Glasgow and is renowned for being a big Celtic supporter.
With Brown, McGregor, Ntcham, Christie, Rogic and Soro all vying for midfield positions, it seems likely that Celtic may look to offload someone if McCarthy does become available.
In other Celtic news, Alan Hutton has been left blown away by his first glimpse of an Ibrox talent.
