Noel Whelan believes West Brom winger Matheus Pereira would not look out of place in the Premier League after his performances in the Championship this season.
The former Leeds United striker and Championship expert, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits there is no guarantee the 24-yr-old will succeed among England’s elite but insists he has seen enough to suggest he will be.
Pereira, on loan from Portuguese giants Sporting CP, has been a constant threat in attack this season with six goals and 16 assists under his belt.
He started Saturday’s clash against Birmingham City – the club’s first game back from lockdown – but was unable to break the Blues down before he was brought off after 85 minutes.
The game finished 0-0, with the point pushing West Brom seven points clear of third-placed Fulham.
With the Baggies edging closer to a return to the top flight this season, Whelan believes that they may already have a Premier League-ready talent in the shape of the Brazilian forward.
“We can say that about a lot of players can’t we, whether they’re ready for the Premier League,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“Only time will tell, they’ve got to get there first, as do Leeds. I’m sure they’ll be relishing it, putting their attributes up against the best players in the world in the Premier League.
“I believe he can, I believed he’s got that talent, I believe he’s got that vision and capability to go into the Premier League and not look out of place.”
A graduate of Sporting CP’s youth ranks, Pereira has played 41 times for his parent club to date.
The versatile winger, who can play on either flank or through the middle as an attacking midfielder, also spent time on loan in Germany with FC Nuremberg.
In other West Brom news, Whelan has been blown away by a Championship ace the Baggies have been named as frontrunners to sign.
