'Wow, they've been robbed' - Exclusive: Ex-striker tears into Newcastle mainstay

Noel Whelan has torn into Newcastle United striker Joelinton for his lack of goals despite his hard work up front.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds United hitman, insists that the 23-year-old needs to start delivering after a difficult start to life in England.

The Brazilian has just one Premier League under his goal for the Magpies so far, scoring the winner against Tottenham back in August.

He was axed from the side for Saturday’s win over Southampton, Steve Bruce choosing to start with Dwight Gayle up front instead.

Whelan says that while Joelinton has shown an impressive work ethic in attack, he has got to start delivering the goods in terms of goals – especially as he reportedly cost £10million more than he thought.

Whelan told Football Insider: “It is about working hard and that but you’ve got to get goals when you’re a striker.

“When you’ve been paid £30million you’ve got to hit the goals, you’ve got to start banging them in, you’ve got to start impressing in that way.

“(Actually £40million) Wow. Well, then they’ve been robbed!”

Saturday’s 1-0 win was only the second time Joelinton has not started in the Premier League this season, Bruce bringing him off the bench to play half an hour at St Mary’s.

He has a total of three Newcastle goals under his belt, two of those coming in the FA Cup.
