Doubts over defender: Three things we learned about Everton from victory v Man City
By Will Butcher
Football Insider analyses three talking points from Everton’s 4-0 win over Manchester City at Goodison Park on Sunday.
Schneiderlin’s first-team slot
France international Morgan Schneiderlin has joined the Merseyside giants from Manchester United for £24million in order to gain first-team football. But with teenager Tom Davies doing no wrong alongside the reliable and consistent Gareth Barry, Schneiderlin already has a fight on his hands to break into the first team set-up at Goodison Park. With Idrissa Gueye and James McCarthy both vying for a place in the middle of the Everton midfield too, Schneiderlin could find it difficult to become first choice after making his debut as a 64th-minute substitute on Sunday afternoon.
Contract for academy product
Tom Davies must be offered a new contract at Goodison Park after starring in the Toffees side against City. Possessing an abundance of talent, the 18-year-old must be snapped up quickly to fend off inevitably interested clubs as he continues to shine under manager Ronald Koeman. Despite his tender age, Davies has shown a maturity when on the ball; offering creativity, vision and an ability to pick a pass with both feet. The shaggy-haired midfielder set up the first goal for the Toffees, playing in Ross Barkley who set up Romelu Lukaku, cleared one off the line and then rounded his perfect performance off with a goal. Despite having a contract until 2021, a new deal and a pay rise should be handed to Davies to give him an incentive to stay in Merseyside.

Doubts over 25-year-old
Despite a solid enough display against City, Ramiro Funes Mori is yet to distance himself from the impression of being a shaky defender, that is known to produce an error or two. The Argentinian is known for his aggression, as well as being accustomed to a rush of blood to the head with the tendency to break the defensive line or join the attack. Alongside Ashley Williams, Funes Mori is improving, but manager Koeman will be desperate to get Phil Jagielka back in the side before targeting a defender in the summer.
In other Everton news, this youngster could be about to join Championship outfit Barnsley on loan.
