Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has torn into Newcastle ahead of the crunch Premier League game with Crystal palace.
Talking on Sky Sports (Sky, 1.30pm) the former Liverpool player has said that Newcastle are a “shambles” and criticised their deadline-day signing of Islam Slimani.
“This game feels bigger for Newcastle,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“It just looks a mess at Newcastle. There’s positivity at Palace, there’s negativity at Newcastle. Sometimes that comes from the manager and the way he speaks, but most of it comes from the owner and what’s going on behind-the-scenes.
“The fact that Newcastle are getting a player on the last day on the window who can’t get a game for Leicester and may only play 10 games between now and the end of the season.
“The other striker – Joselu – couldn’t get a game for Stoke, another team down there.
“Newcastle are a bit of a shambles.”
Benitez signed Joselu in the summer from Stoke for five million but the striker has only scored four goals in 22 games.
That led to him entering the market again in January, signing Slimani on loan from Leicester for the rest of the season.
He joined Leicester for £27.5m in the summer of 2016 but has only scored 13 goals in 46 appearances for the former Premier League champions.
This season he’s only scored one goal in 12 games but is now tasked with firing Newcastle to Premier League survival.
However, Slimani is not fit for today’s Premier League game and Joselu didn’t make the squad, with Dwight Gayle playing up top.
