27-year-old the weak-link: Three worst Newcastle players from draw with Birmingham
COMMENT By Danny Wright
Football Insider analyses the three worst Newcastle players from their 0-0 draw with Birmingham at St Andrews on Saturday.
The 30-year-old has a bit of a stinker against the Blues and should be dropped from Rafa Benitez’s side for the next game against Wigan. Gouffran barely got involved and he proved that he may be struggling for fitness over what has been a very intense season for the Magpies. He was replaced by Christian Atsu late into the game and the loanee seems to be a ready-made replacement for the French winger.
Newcastle’s defence remained solid despite long spells of dominance from the home side. However Anita constantly looked the weak link in the back four as Birmingham continued to attack down his side of the pitch. The 27-year-old failed to read the game and showed that he lacks the anticipation to be able to become a starting feature at right-back in the absence of DeAndre Yedlin. Jesus Gamez has barely been used by Rafa Benitez this season but it’s surely time the Spaniard brings him in.

The 29-year-old was standing in for Jonjo Shelvey who has suffered with illness this week and did nothing to prove that he can force the ex-Swansea man out of the starting line-up in future weeks. Diame looked incapable on the ball and his first touch throughout the game was laughable at times. In the first half he summed up his performance when he swung his leg at thin air in an attempt to volley the ball at the goal.
