It seems that Newcastle United may axe Joselu just a year after he moved to St James’ Park in a deal worth £5.75million.
In his debut season on Tyneside, the 28-year-old forward has scored just four goals in 30 appearances in all competitions and he has barely started a game since January as the club’s form improved to the point that their Premier League safety was confirmed.
Newcastle’s striker woes have ultimately led to German newspaper BILD reporting that the club are eyeing up Hannover forward Niclas Fullkrug ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 6ft 2in German colossus has been in top form this season, scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions and according to the report, he could be worth a minimal fee to a Premier League club.
Fullkrug appears to be a similar kind of striker to Joselu and it would not be a surprise to see Rafa Benitez line up a move for the ex-Werder Bremen forward with a view to shipping out Joselu.
The former Stoke man, who according to the Express agreed a £50,000-a-week deal at St James’ Park last year, has been a very poor signing and in truth, everyone could see that happening as Benitez was forced to look at signing cheap options.
Mike Ashley is not likely to dig deep this summer either so it could be another transfer window of bargain basement deals, loans and free transfers.
Getting rid of Joselu and bringing in Fullkrug would be a good start though as the striker issue at St James’ Park has to be among Benitez’s top priorities.
In other Newcastle United news, the Magpies are in pole position to sign this 6ft 7in colossus who has snubbed Real Madrid and Man United.
