Agbonlahor ‘100%’ sure on Aston Villa signing Ivan Toney after source’s reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Ivan Toney is “the striker Aston Villa need” as Unai Emery’s side weigh up a summer swoop for the Brentford star.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested signing the prolific 27-year-old would open up a wealth of new possibilities in attack for Emery.

Sources told this site on Thursday (27 April) that Aston Villa are eyeing up a move for Brentford striker Toney this summer.

The England international, who is also the subject of interest from Man United, will have two years left on his contract in June.

Toney has scored 20 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions this term – his second consecutive prolific season in the Premier League.

Football Insider revealed on 10 April that Aston Villa are planning to sign two A-list forwards this summer after losing Danny Ings in the January window.

When asked if Toney is the right player for Villa, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “100%. He’s the striker that Aston Villa need.

“If you go and get him you can play Watkins off the left, you can play two up front – and if Watkins gets injured, Toney is just as good.

“You’d have two England internationals would be fighting for call-ups.

“We’ve been very lucky with injuries to Watkins this season. If he was to be out for a long time, you can’t rely on Duran – who is a youngster from the MLS.

“Villa definitely need a striker. If it’s not Ivan Toney, I’m sure Unai Emery will bring in the right man.”
