The agent of Hull striker Abel Hernandez has revealed that his client had the chance to sign for Newcastle United during the summer transfer window.
Pablo Bentancur claims that Championship sides Aston Villa and Birmingham also had a strong interest in Hernandez, 27, before he suffered a serious Achilles injury which will keep him sidelined for the next six months.
The 29-times Uruguay international striker had a blistering start to the season with Hull, scoring three goals in three league appearances.
Rafa Benitez’s striker search seemingly saw him keep tabs on the former Palermo hitman before an unfortunate injury blow saw his and Newcastle’s chances of teaming up together fail to materialise.
“He had an important market, strong interest from Aston Villa and Birmingham, they wanted him at all costs, and there was also a chance to go to Newcastle,” said Bentancur, as quoted by the Hull Daily Mail in their live blog on Monday [10:03am].
“It’s a bad thing, but football is the way it is, Abel has strength and is young, he will be back.”
Hernandez, like most of his Hull team-mates, didn’t have the best time last season as his side were relegated from the Premier League.
He missed a good chunk of the campaign through injury but still made 29 appearances across all competitions, scoring just five goals in the process.
Football Insider Verdict
Hernandez’s goal scoring record in the Premier League shows that Newcastle may have dodged a bullet in trying to sign him. His constant injury woes are also something that the Magpies should try to avoid especially when so many of their existing players are prone to spells on the sidelines. Joselu was perhaps bought in because of Hernandez’s injury, but the ex-Stoke man already looks like a much better player than the Hull star, who has just eight goals in 49 top-flight league appearances in England. The biggest disaster would have been if Newcastle signed him and then he suffered his serious injury but Benitez may come back in for him next summer once he has recovered as he is clearly a fan of the Uruguayan ace.
In other Newcastle United news, Joselu has already been won over by the Toon Army and has compared them to the supporters of this European giant.
