Rangers manager Steven Gerrard thinks he is “ahead of the game” in sitting down and speaking with his new players as he gets to grips with his new role as Gers boss – and revealed that he plans to have spoken with the majority of the squad before they return for pre-season training on June 15th.
The Gers boss also revealed that a few of the squad were staying in the same hotel as him in Dubai last month as he prepared to officially take the reins on June 1st.
The 38-year-old thinks he has “plenty of time” before the Gers’ first game to speak with them – with a number of the squad currently away on holiday.
“I’m ahead of the game in terms of speaking to certain individuals and I’ll be speaking to more as we go along,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
The idea is to try to speak to the majority of them before we get back. But I also have to respect that some are on family holidays or international duty. There’s plenty of time from now until the first game of the season to have meetings and chats.
“I’m definitely ahead of the game. I’m not sure whether some of the players followed me to Dubai but a few were staying in the same hotel as me, so that gave me a chance to speak to them.”
Football Insider verdict:
Gerrard seems to be wasting no time in getting to know his squad and getting to grips with the task awaiting him at Ibrox. The Gers boss is going to need to hit the ground running when they kick off their Europa League campaign on July 12th or he could find himself up against it before he properly gets started. Taking the time to get to meet his players before they all return for pre-season is a nice touch by Gerrard as he looks to make his mark and get the squad buying into what he is trying to do at Ibrox. With only a matter of weeks until the competitive actions gets underway again, Gerrard doesn’t have a huge amount of time to get players in, clear the deadwood out of the squad and start getting them to play in the way that he wants to try to be successful.
