'All the right signals' - McCulloch backs Gerrard over criticism of Rangers players
Rangers legend Lee McCulloch thinks Gers boss Steven Gerrard was right to publicly criticise the fitness of his squad – and insists it sends out “all the right signals” about Gerrard’s style of management.
The Gers boss revealed that he thinks the Light Blues weren’t fit enough last season as they limped home third in the Scottish Premiership and McCulloch agrees, claiming it’s time for Gers stars to “shape up or ship out.”
McCulloch thinks the last game of the season against Hibs and the final three Old Firm games of the season are a perfect example of the Gers’ fitness problems – insisting anyone who watched them would agree with Gerrard’s “withering assessment.”
“It may have been seen as a risky move by some on the outside for Steven Gerrard to criticise the fitness of the Rangers players last season publicly given that there are still more than a few of them around, but for me, it sent out all the right signals about what will be expected under the new man’s leadership,” McCulloch said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“Simply, it is time for the Rangers players to shape up, or shape out.
“Gerrard was spot on, and anyone who watched the closing stages of the last game of the season at Hibs or the last three Old Firm games would have to agree with his withering assessment.”

Football Insider verdict:
It’s difficult to argue with McCulloch on this one – the Light Blues stars were gulping down air for long spells in the last day clash with Hibs. Gerrard’s side will no doubt be put through a rigorous pre-season schedule that will help boos their fitness, as well as small changes around the club, as the Gers boss tries to change things. Having a squad capable of dealing with the physical demands of challenging for a title is one thing the Light Blues must fix. Then Gerrard has the unenviable task of finding out who has the mental strength needed to go with their physical fitness. One thing is for certain, Gerrard has a lot on his plate this summer before the Light Blues kick a ball in anger. If Gerrard can get on top of all that then he’s in a strong position to go on and actually challenge Celtic for the title this season and push for the Gers first major trophy since 2011.
