Allan McGregor pal issues Rangers claim after source’s talks reveal

Alan Hutton has insisted Allan McGregor has what it takes to continue playing for another season with contract talks underway at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender and close friend of the Ibrox keeper insisted the 40-year-old is still performing at the top of his game.

An Ibrox source told Football Insider on Monday (9 May) that McGregor is in advanced talks over a new deal at Rangers, with his current terms expiring this summer.

The shot-stopper is the oldest player in the Scottish Premiership.

Hutton admitted Mcgregor has come under fire for the odd mistake since returning to Ibrox.

However, he insisted that is because his standards are so high, any error stands out.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Why not have one more year? I believe he could still play on.

“He’s been criticised from time to time for making mistakes but I’ve always said that’s because his bar is that high. People judge him at that level and if he ever falls from that level, you’re under the microscope.

“That’s because he plays so well week in, week out. It is what it is when you’re a goalkeeper. This is a guy who’s built for the big games, built for the big moments.

“Even if he does sign for next year and they bring in another goalkeeper for competition, that’s also good for him. You can spread the minutes between the keepers.

“I want to see him play on but ultimately it’s going to be down to him.”

McGregor has played 46 times across all competitions this season, with 16 clean sheets under his belt.

Jon McLaughlin is currently the second-choice keeper at Ibrox.
