Arsenal legend weighs in on star contract stand-off, delivers emphatic message
By Harry Sykes
Thierry Henry has urged Arsenal star Mesut Ozil to stay at the club and “become a legend”.
Writing in his column for The Sun, the former Arsenal striker was full of praise for the Germany international, saying that when he returned to Arsenal to work on his fitness levels he was excited to see Ozil in action.
The 28-year-old midfielder has just less than 18 months remaining on his contract – along with Alexis Sanchez – and has been in a stand-off with Arsenal over signing an extension.
Ozil has claimed that the hold-up isn’t about money, but that he wants to be clear about the future of manager Arsene Wenger, whose own contract runs out this summer.
Thierry Henry has said fans have to respect that this is the case but urged the player to commit his long-term future to Arsenal, win a title and become a club legend.

Henry, in his column in The Sun, wrote: “Mesut has won the World Cup with Germany. But at club level, he has only one title, with Real Madrid in 2012. He will be desperate for more
“But he can do that at the Emirates. That’s why I’d urge him to stay and become an Arsenal legend.
“Win that first title. Be the future of Arsenal. Not just the assist man, but the guy who drives the team forward.
“This Arsenal side are not far from winning the title.
“If this team win the league they will go down in history. They will be special. Mesut can be remembered as one of the club’s greatest-ever players.”
Arsenal fans will be hoping that Ozil listens to Henry and signs a new contract before the end of the season.
He joined Arsenal from Real Madrid for £40m in 2013, and has scored 29 goals and provided 50 assists across 141 appearances in all competitions.
Football Insider verdict:
As the contract stand-offs with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez rumble on in to the second half of the season, fans must be starting to fear the worst. Thierry Henry says it’s time for Ozil to commit and drive the club towards a title and become a legend in the process. It’s a big decision for the Germany international though. At 28 he’s got one last big contract left in him and he has to weigh up whether Arsenal can deliver the Premier League title he would love to win. Arsene Wenger appears to be key to Ozil’s future and the sooner that’s cleared up, the better for everyone. It would be a huge boost to the club if he does commit though – it could be exactly what they need if they want to mount a serious challenge to Chelsea this season.
