Rangers home in on second January signing as PL club clear the way for move - reports

By Emma Sanders

Arsenal have recalled Jon Toral from his loan spell at Granada ahead of an expected loan move to Rangers, according to a report.

The Express report the Gunners have triggered an option to recover the midfielder in January and he is now expected to complete a loan move to Rangers.

Toral’s move to Scotland has been reported heavily over the last week and his return to Arsenal suggests the deal is about to be completed.

The midfielder is expected to link up with Mark Warburton, who he has worked with in the past during a loan spell at Brentford in 2014.

When asked about whether the club had recalled him with the intention of letting him leave for Rangers, Arsene Wenger replied, “We work on it to see if it is possible, yes,” as quoted by The Express.

“He has played games there [Granada] but at the moment he doesn’t play and personally I think it would be a good transition for him.”

He has featured just six times for Granada since joining in the summer and Toral is keen to move elsewhere in order to gain regular first team action.

Granada released a statement on the club’s official website and thanked Toral for his services to the club during his loan spell, highlighting the importance of his goal against Osasuna in the Copa del Rey.

If the deal is completed, Toral would become Warburton’s second signing in January after Rangers sealed a loan move for Emerson Hyndman from Bournemouth on Monday.

Football Insider verdict:

Toral was very successful during his spell in the Championship with Birmingham last season and he has proven his talent in the UK under Warburton at Brentford. He struggled to gain regular game time at Granada so it is in the interest of all parties that he seek a new challenge and he has the quality to improve Rangers’ squad. The midfielder is a great passer and has the ability to open up teams and that could prove extremely valuable to Warburton. The club have been keen to seal a deal and it will certainly come as a relief that he has now returned to Arsenal and negotiations can take place.

In other Rangers news, this is why Hyndman could be the signing of the season.
