Nathan Baker dropped to the bench for Aston Villa’s Monday evening clash against Newcastle – and Villa fans took to Twitter to express their fury.

The 25-year-old centre-back started the club’s 3-1 defeat against Barnsley last Tuesday and Steve Bruce has decided to bring Tommy Elphick back into the team for him.

The experienced boss is currently desperate to find a solution to the Midlands giants’ poor form which has seen them remain winless since their Boxing Day victory over Burton.

However, a number of Aston Villa fans are adamant that the answer is not Elphick and that Baker is much better than the summer signing.

Many supporters struggled to understand the defensive switch, while one fan went as far as to call Bruce deluded.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Baker has been a part of the Aston Villa first team for seven years now after making his debut in 2011.

Meanwhile, Elphick was signed in the summer by former boss Roberto Di Matteo from Premier League outfit Bournemouth and immediately took over the captaincy of the club.

However, it would seem that the former Cherries ace has not met the standards required of those at Aston Villa this season and that he is one of a number of under-performing players this campaign.
