Darren Bent scored the winning goal for Derby against Birmingham City – and Aston Villa fans on Twitter hailed their former player.

Steve McClaren’s side recorded a 1-0 win at Pride Park against the Midlands outfit on Tuesday afternoon.

Former England international Bent scored from the penalty spot then celebrated in front of the away supporters.

This delighted the Villa Park faithful who hailed their former player for scoring against their rivals.

Bent moved to Villa from Sunderland in 2011 for a fee of £24 million. The 32-year-old went on to make 72 appearances for the club, scoring 25 goals.

This season for McClaren’s side, Bent has scored four goals in 22 Championship and EFL Cup matches.

The three points against the Blues sees the Rams move into seventh place in the league table, one place and one point outside the play-off spots.

It also means Zola’s side have now moved below Aston Villa in the table, with their rivals in tenth place and the Blues in 11th.

Since taking over from the sacked Gary Rowett, former Chelsea man Zola has lost both of his Championship matches.

The first was a late defeat against current leaders Brighton at St Andrews before falling to another loss at Derby.

But for the Rams they have won eight of their last nine games in the Championship as they aim to finish in the top six at the end of the season.
