Aston Villa fans call for Bruce to axe 23-year-old against Newcastle

By Will Butcher

Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to call for Steve Bruce to drop goalkeeper Sam Johnstone for Monday night’s clash against Newcastle.

The 23-year-old has made a number of high-profile errors during his season-long loan move from Manchester United, despite a wonderful debut in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Tottenham.

In his last outing, Johnstone allowed a tame shot to squirm past him for Barnsley’s second goal during a 3-1 defeat to the Tykes at Villa Park.

Yet to keep a clean sheet in claret and blue in seven games since confirming a half-season loan spell with the Midlands outfit, Johnstone could now be dropped by manager Bruce.

Aston Villa fans called for Bruce to be decisive on Twitter and drop the January signing from his starting line-up to face Newcastle at St. James’ Park, with many calling for veteran back-up Mark Bunn to replace him.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

In what is his first loan spell away from Old Trafford, Johnstone has conceded an average of two goals every game, with 14 conceded in six losses and a draw since he joined.

After allowing Italian stopper Pierluigi Gollini to join Serie A outfit Atalanta on loan, 32-year-old Bunn could be given a chance to stake his claim for the number one spot.

In other Aston Villa news, Tony Cascarino believes Bruce should demand this to boost his players on the pitch.
