Agbonlahor 'impressed' as Sawiris role in Grealish's Aston Villa exit emerges

Nassef Sawiris deserves credit for his personal involvement in negotiations with Man City over Jack Grealish’s Aston Villa exit.

So says Villa Park icon Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the owner’s role in the British record transfer.

As revealed by Football Insider on 4th August, Villa have raked in £100million including add-ons for the 25-year-old academy graduate.

And the Athletic reported three days later that Egyptian billionaire Sawiris led negotiations over the fee with City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

Agbonlahor was “very impressed” by the fact that Sawiris was personally involved in securing the best possible fee for his club.

“I think more owners should do this sort of thing,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“If I was the owner of the football club, I’d want to be involved in major transactions like that.

“If it was smaller transactions, he’d probably leave it to Christian Purslow or other members of the board.

“But for such a big transfer, I’d be excited as an owner to be involved and get as much money as I can for the club.

“So I’m very impressed he’s gone and done, and it doesn’t surprise me. He’s sort of got the money back that he paid for the club by selling one player.

Grealish scored 32 times and supplied 43 assists in his 213 games for his boyhood club.

He made his debut for City in the 1-0 Community Shield loss to Leicester City on 7th August.
