BBC pundit: Leeds now have a difficult decision to make regarding this player

By Harvey Byrne

Noel Whelan has stated that Leeds now have a tough decision to make regarding defender Pontus Jansson with the defender currently sat on 14 yellow cards for the season.

The powerful Sweden international has been in fine form this season after signing on loan from Serie A side Torino this summer.

However, one side of his game that he can be criticised for is his poor disciplinary record.

The 26-year-old has already had to miss three games this season through suspension and if he receives another yellow card this campaign he will leave his team short once more with 15 yellows bringing a three-match ban.

Now, with just four matches of the Championship season left alongside three possible play-off fixtures for Leeds, Whelan has stated that the club have a difficult decision regarding what to do with Jansson.

“Monk will know Leeds didn’t play well – but they got the job done,” told Whelan as quoted by the BBC Leeds match blog (10.02pm).

“What do Leeds do about Jansson? It’s such a hard one for Leeds – what are they going to do? One more yellow and you lose him. Do they wait? Lose him for the play offs? Take one for the team in the 80th minute against Wolves, so you know you have him in the play offs? Take that ban for the final three games? Wait until they’ve secured their top six place?

“If Leeds are in the play offs, they’ll want him then, simple as.”

Jansson has starred in 31 league matches for Leeds this season and his formidable partnership in the back line with Kyle Bartley has been key to the club’s high placing.

Garry Monk is otherwise short for options for the centre-back positions with Liam Cooper currently serving a six-match suspension himself which will see him return against Wigan for the final game of the season.
