Benitez delivers stern warning over the future of his Newcastle squad

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has warned his squad that they cannot afford to keep making mistakes if they are to survive in the Premier League this season.

The Spanish boss saw his side come out on the wrong side of a 5 goal clash against Leicester City on Saturday, with an own goal from Ayoze Perez the difference between the Magpies and the Foxes at St James’ Park.

It means that the north east side have picked up one solitary point in their last seven games, with six defeats offset by a draw against West Brom.

Such a dreadful run has seen the Magpies slip down the table, and sit 16th, just two places and two points above the relegation zone following their return to England’s top flight from the Championship last season.

Now Benitez has issued his inexperienced squad with the stern warning that they have got to learn and learn quickly if they are to climb out of this predicament in the future, having previously predicted that the club could find themselves in such dire straits.

He was quoted by BBC Sport’s live blog of the game (19:44, 19:55) as saying: “It was another mistake (Leicester’s third goal). We have to learn and have more experience and manage it better.

“These kind of mistakes, you cannot make in the Premier League and we are doing it week in, week out.

“I said it could be like this. We have to understand that the only way [to improve the situation] is to work harder and not to make these kind of mistakes.”

The Magpies have a clash against Everton in midweek, as they look to end their poor run of form and avoid being dragged into the bottom three, where West Ham, Swansea and Crystal Palace are currently sitting.
