Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has revealed that he is set to name a strong line up for the club’s FA Cup clash against Luton Town as he insists they are looking to make it as far as they can in the competition.

The Magpies will welcome the League Two leaders to St James’ Park on Saturday after having picked up a much needed win in their first game of 2018, Ayoze Perez netting the only goal to secure a 1-0 victory away at Stoke City.

Luton meanwhile have been in impressive form, sitting four points clear at the top of England’s fourth tier, while having scored the second most league goals across all the divisions, behind only Premier League giants Manchester City.

However, despite a busy festive period and a lesser quality of opposition, Benitez has insisted he will be sending out an experienced side on Saturday, and acknowledged the fans’ desire to pick up some major silverware after a 48-year wait.

He was quoted by the Chronicle’s Chris Waugh, on his personal Twitter account, as saying: “We approach every game with the same mentality; this is the most important game for us right now.

“We know it is a massive game for them, but it is for us too & we will try to win.

“I know the fans want to win trophies but the reality is we are where we are right now.

“I think we will have a strong team. We only play one game this week, one game next week, so I will put out a team that for me will be enough to win the game.”

The Magpies have endured a terrible record in the FA Cup in recent years, with owner Mike Ashley well known for demanding that league performances are prioritised by the manager.

This has resulted in the club having failed to make in past the fourth round since the 2005/06 campaign, seven of those seasons the north east side falling at the third round.
