Benitez reveals details behind 'strange' last-gasp Newcastle failed striker transfer
Rafa Benitez has said that the transfer deadline day drama surrounding striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was “strange” but that the club reacted well.
Talking in his pre-match press conference, the Newcastle manager opened up on one of the more dramatic late moves.
It had looked like Mitrovic was about to secure a loan move to former club Anderlecht before that broke down late in the day.
He then managed to secure a very late move to Championship team Fulham.
Talking on Friday, as quoted by Chris Waugh, a reporter for the Chronicle, Benitez said, “The situation with Mitrovic was a little bit strange. Anderlecht kept saying yes, then it was a no.
“But we reacted well, he wanted minutes and we couldn’t guarantee it with Slimani, but we got it done.

Mitrovic, 23, moved to Newcastle from Anderlecht in the summer of 2015 for £17million but has under-performed.
He has only scored 17 goals in 72 games despite showing promise and winning the Newcastle fans over.
He will now try to get his career back on track with Fulham in the Championship.
