Heck unleashes two rarely-seen fringe players: Leeds best possible XI v Sheffield Wednesday
With Leeds’ season effectively over, it’s time for Paul Heckingbottom to look to the future and start giving players a chance to see if they’re good enough for next season.
There’s little doubt around Elland Road that there’s going to be a big clearout in the summer as new manager Heckingbottom gets set to build a squad that can mount a challenge for the play-offs next season.
The squad he has inherited has a few great players but overall it’s not good enough – and that’s been proved as Leeds languish in mid-table.
Jay-Roy Grot deserves another chance to lead the line after bagging two for the Under-23s last week, and that means Pierre-Michael Lasogga and Cale Ekuban will warm the bench.
And the biggest surprise should be the senior debut of Tom Pearce at left-back.

January signing Laurens De Bock has been poor since he arrived and it’s time to blood Pearce and see what he’s made of.
He made the bench last week and is ready for his full debut. Heckingbottom has already experimented successfully with youth after introducing Bailey Peacock-Farrell to the side.
He’s been the best player over the past couple of weeks and it’s time to see who else can shine in competitive fixtures before the season’s out.
Given all of that, here’s the best possible starting XI that Heckingbottom can select to take on Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
