Dave King makes controversial Rangers claim after Gerrard is appointed new boss

Rangers chairman Dave King has made the controversially claimed that the Gers were ‘best team in Scotland’ after some good results in the Florida Cup in January.

King, speaking as Steven Gerrard was appointed as the new Gers manager, made the claim that the team is better than its’ current league position of third place, and they showed that when they defeated Atletico Mineiro in January.

“I think to simplify the issue it’s about winning games,” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“I think if we look at the team and my personal view is I think the team is better than they are playing.

“If you look at the way the team played when they came back from the Florida trip, they were playing really well – they were the best team in Scotland for that period.

“And then it kind of fell apart a little bit after the home game against Celtic, it lost its way a little bit.”

The Light Blues have went to pieces after losing 3-2 to a 10 man Celtic team at Ibrox in March, a loss which saw any chance of a Gers title challenge come to an end, and it eventually lead to the departure of Graeme Murty six weeks later.

Football Insider verdict

The Ibrox chairman’s comments are quite odd, the Gers did do quite well in a January friendly tournament, but they haven’t looked like the best team in Scotland since about 2011. What Gerrard will have to do is look at how the team has went to pieces so badly after the defeat to Celtic, and bring in players who have the mentality to cope with bad results, which the currently side do not seem to have. Gerrard has had to overcome bad results as a player, and he can help the players build themselves up to fight another day. There are some good players at Ibrox – the likes of Ross McCrorie, Alfredo Morelos, and Jamie Murphy – that you could build a team around, but for the side to live up to King’s expectations they will really need to bring in some quality additions in the summer transfer window, only then will have have a chance of becoming the best team in Scotland.
