The rumours about Jermain Defoe moving to Rangers are picking up pace and the latest major development is that leading bookmakers BetVictor have slashed his odds to just 3/1 to join in the summer.
Some people may still scoff, but Steven Gerrard was first listed at 25/1 to be the next Rangers manager before a similar trajectory saw him take the job.
And there are plenty of people who think that a move might not be as fantastic as it first seems.
Barry Ferguson has said the lure of silverware and working under Steven Gerrard could be a good replacement for money.
And, as he says, Defoe surely has enough of that anyway?
Talking in the Daily Record, Ferguson said: “If Gerrard can offer him this chance to end his career with a bang then maybe Defoe will reach the conclusion money can’t buy him the happiness he might find in Glasgow. Maybe that thought will entice him to make the move.”
Another good reason why Defoe might make the move this summer is his situation. Looking at the odds on offer from BetVictor, he doesn’t have a lot of high-profile options.
Rangers are the big favourite at 3/1.
After that comes Brentford, QPR, Derby, Reading, Nottingham Forest and Leeds.
Does he need the money that badly? This is definitely one to watch carefully.
