Rangers are close to signing former Liverpool star Martin Skrtel, according to a club Insider.
The Four Lads Had a Dream blog, a site that consistently breaks Rangers news before the mainstream press, made the claim on Thursday night.
The tweet came in response to a fan mentioning four names that Rangers have been linked with: Skrtel, Jermain Defoe, Lucas Leiva and Dominic Solanke.
Their reply said that Rangers were “definitely close to Skrtel” although added that there was no agreement yet.
This comes on the back of Turkish outlet Yeniakit claiming that Fenerbahçe are close to accepting a £3.9million offer for Skrtel.
Football Insider verdict:
Of all the big names that Rangers and Gerrard have been linked with over the past few days, this is the one that seems like it’s definitely going to happen. We revealed yesterday that Gerrard is prioritising defence (perhaps not surprisingly after the final day 5-5 draw) and that Rangers have already made a £1.5million bid for Connor Goldson which has been rejected. A centre-back pairing of Skrtel and Goldson would be a massive upgrade on what the club has had this year, and once the backline is sorted out, Gerrard can start looking further up the field. Remember though, Rangers were actually top scorers in the Premiership last season – the real issue was the 50 goals they let in, more than anyone else in the top six. By contrast, Celtic only let in 25 goals on their way to yet another title. If Skrtel and Goldson can be similarly tight then we could see a fascinating tussle at the top of the Premiership. Skrtel might be pushing on, but he’s an absolutely no-nonsense defender that fans will love. He’s got enough left to boss the Premiership for the next few years.
