John Hartson has said that Rangers have got no chance of signing Jermain Defoe in the summer, and pointed out his huge salary as the reason why it couldn’t happen.

Defoe was linked to Rangers in the Daily Record and it was claimed that Steven Gerrard had opened preliminary talks with both him and Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke.

Talking on BT Sport ahead of the Scottish Premiership Play-Offs final, Hartson rubbished these reports and made reference to his Premier League wages.

“During the summer, Rangers and Celtic will be inked with every available player in the country,” Hartson said.

“It’s just the silly season, no football, the papers have to write about something to sell papers.

“He’s on £120k-a-week at Bournemouth… How on earth can he come to Rangers?

“If they were getting him in on loan then they’d have to pay half of that. I’m not having it.”

Football Insider verdict:

Rangers fans will be loving being linked to players of the quality of Defoe. He’s a proper Premier League striker who has a fantastic record at the top level. He might have struggled at Bournemouth this season, but look at his record… 142 goals in 360 appearances for Tottenham, and a total of 242 goals in 630 appearances. Defoe would absolutely monster the Premiership but could it really happen? He’s got two years left on his contract at Bournemouth so they can’t get him as a free agent. And even if they could convince Bournemouth to let him go on a loan deal, they would still have to pay a huge chunk of his wages. It’s not the same as a player like Solanke, where Liverpool might be prepared to subsidise to get the right development. Defoe is 35 and in the last couple of years of his career. We’re with Hartson on this one… although we didn’t think Steven Gerrard would go to Rangers either. And, we’re not entirely sure that Hartson has got his wages right anyway. One report claims Defoe is on £65k-a-week and half of that for a loan move? Stranger things have happened.
