Betting update: Man United installed as heavy favourites to sign international attacker
By Harry Sykes
Manchester United are the heavy favourites to sign Gareth Bale in the summer transfer window, according to the latest bookies odds.
This comes on the back of a report from the BBC that claimed Jose Mourinho would “fight with other coaches” to sign the winger if he wasn’t in Real Madrid’s plans.
Most big transfers have dragged their feet this summer but this is one that could become clear very soon.
Real Madrid are set to play manchester United tonight in the Super Cup, and Mourinho believes that if Bale plays it is a statement of intent that the Spanish giants aim to hold onto him.
If that’s the case the transfer would be dead in the water.

“If he plays, it is the clearest signal that he is staying there,” said Mourinho ahead of the huge game.
“Then I won’t even think about it. If he is not in the club’s plans and it is true that a player like Bale is at the departure gate, I will try to be there waiting for him at the other side.”
Manchester United fans, already excited about the match, will have an extra reason to scour the team news when it’s released this evening.
And they can also take heart from the latest odds from leading bookie SkyBet, who have installed Manchester United as the short favourites in an elite race.
They have Manchester United at just 7/4 to sign Bale before the end of the summer transfer window.
Chelsea are second favourites in what SkyBet see as a five-horse race, but they’re way back at 14/1, with Man City and Tottenham even further behind and PSG bringing up the rear.
Football Insider verdict:
This might still be in the realm of fantasy football at the moment, but if Bale is left out of the high-profile Super Cup match tonight then all the headlines will be screaming about a Man United move tomorrow. Mourinho has been hugely clever about this – if Real Madrid don’t select Bale now then you can consider a move highly likely. Mourinho has set his stall out while still maintaining a huge amount of respect for his former club. Meanwhile, Bale might well consider playing out the rest of his peak years back in England. And Mourinho has created a mouth-watering attacking line-up that Bale would absolutely flourish in. Let’s not mince words – if Bale did sign for Man United they would be our heavy favourites to win the Premier League.
