Steve Bruce shares plans that will delight Newcastle

By Russell Edge

Aston Villa manager and former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has assured Newcastle fans that he will be doing everything in his power to stop Brighton and give the Magpies the chance to clinch the Championship title.

Second-placed Newcastle go into the final day of the Championship season knowing that if they better Brighton’s result, then they will be crowned champions.

The Magpies host 14th placed Barnsley at St James’ Park, while the Seagulls have to travel to 12th placed Aston Villa with the title on the line.

The man at the helm of the side at Villa Park is Steve Bruce, who used to manage the Magpies’ fierce rivals Sunderland, although the manager himself was born just outside of Newcastle in a small town called Corbridge.

However, despite his connections to the Stadium of Light, Bruce insists it is his Geordie roots which will be coming through on Sunday afternoon.

The Chronicle report Bruce as having said: “I’m a Geordie at the end of the day. My Newcastle roots are still there.

“My mum and dad and my family all live in Newcastle so they’ll be wanting me to do well for obvious reasons.”

Bruce’s Villa side have endured a difficult first campaign in the Championship, following their relegation alongside Rafael Benitez’s side and Norwich.
