Sky Sports pundit: Newcastle would be the ideal destination for PL striker linked with move

Phil Thompson believes that Sunderland forward Jermain Defoe should make the ideal switch to Newcastle in the summer transfer window.
The 34-year-old is reportedly set to leave the Black Cats on a free in the summer after Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed last week.
The Sun claim that Newcastle are in the race to sign the prolific striker, but face competition from the likes of West Ham and Bournemouth for his signature.
Sky Sports pundit Thompson feels that Defoe would be best served making the controversial move from Sunderland to their arch rivals Newcastle.
“All of the clubs who come up will surely be interested in him but I would think straight away that Newcastle would be the ideal one,” Thompson told Sky Sports. “Staying up in the same area would be ideal for him, although that obviously wouldn’t sit well with Sunderland fans.

“Dwight Gayle has done well but has never delivered in the Premier League, likewise for Aleksandar Mitrovic, whereas Defoe has proven yet again that he has that qualify.
Defoe was unable to prevent Sunderland slipping down into the Championship, despite being their biggest goal threat.
The England international did manage 14 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions and proved that he is still top-flight quality.
Meanwhile, Sunderland’s arch rivals Newcastle have just secured promotion from the Championship and will be back in the Premier League next season.
Rafael Benitez is believed to have a £100million bank at his disposal as he looks to shape his squad ahead of their return to England’s top division.
Defoe is a marksman scorer in the Premier League and has managed 158 goals in just 465 appearances across spells at Sunderland, Tottenham, West Ham and Portsmouth.
In other Newcastle transfer news, they are eying a £15million-rated goalkeeper from the Premier League.
