Graeme Souness has backed Steven Gerrard to bring in good new players for Rangers this summer.
The former Liverpool legend backed the new manager to strengthen Rangers effectively over the summer transfer window, but warned against fans expecting big names to arrive.
However, he said that with the right mix of players, Rangers could catch Celtic and finish above them.
Talking to the BBC, Souness said: “I’m hoping that he’s got some money to spend, he can attract some loan players.
“That mix, along with what he brings, I’m hoping Rangers can have a really good season. And a really good season means they have to catch Celtic and finish above them.
“I’m not sure he’ll be bringing big names in, but what he’ll bring in is maybe a younger player who is about to burst onto the scene, but are not quite good enough for Liverpool or maybe another Premier League team.
“Steven is highly thought of down in England, well respected, and he’ll have no problem picking the phone up and having people do him favours. There’ll be an element of that but no doubt he’ll want to buy a couple as well.”
Football Insider verdict:
Even before he’s made any inroads into the transfer market, Gerrard proved that he was a good fit at Rangers. The media spotlight has really put Rangers back on the map as a big club and that will be great for Scottish football. However, one of the expectations from Rangers fans if not the board, is that Gerrard will be able to use his extensive contacts and links with Liverpool to bring in some exciting new players. Gerrard has already been linked with a few Liverpool youngsters and that’s definitely where Souness is hinting players might come from, but with the World Cup finals putting extra strain on players this summer, he might well have to wait for managers to see if any of their players get injured before being allowed to complete some loan moves. Gerrard won’t be able to afford big names even if he wants to bring any in, but second tier players who have yet to prove themselves, but could make a name in the Premiership, like Dominic Solanke, would be exceptional for Rangers.
