Remembering Caixinha first team selected at Rangers: Only five of 14 who played remain

By Jason Black

Pedro Caixinha has overseen a huge turnover of players at Rangers this summer with no fewer than 23 players coming or going since the end of last season.

With so many changes in the six months since Caixinha took charge, Football Insider decided to take a look at the first side selected by the Portugese as Rangers manager, which came in a 4-0 Scottish Cup win over Hamilton in March.

Wes Foderingham (goalkeeper) – Former Swindon ‘keeper has been number one consistently under Warburton and Caixinha; one of the few players fans would have rather kept after last season.

James Tavernier (right-back) – Like Foderingham, a consistent regular under both Warburton and Caixinha.

Clint Hill (centre-back) – Hill found himself playing regularly under Caixinha but left the club at the end of the season when his cotnract expired. Scored.

Danny Wilson (centre-back) – Injury problems limited Wilson’s games towards the end of last season as Caixinha was just getting started as manager and is now back-up to Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso

Lee Wallace (left-back) – Started at left-back against Hamilton and scored; still first choice at left-back and still captain.

Jon Toral (central midfield) – One of the Spaniard’s best performances for Rangers and was rarely seen again before leaving at the end of his loan deal.

Jason Holt (central midfield) – Holt played regularly under Caixinha last season before being bombed out for Ryan Jack and Graham Dorrans over the summer; linked with a move to Hearts in a swap deal for Jamie Walker but it never went through.

Emerson Hyndman (central midfield) -Rising start Hyndman scored the opener against Hamilton but left Rangers at the end of his loan deal in June.

Barrie McKay (left winger) – Rare start for McKay under Caixinha. Left to rejoin Mark Warburton  at Nottingham Forest.

Martyn Waghorn (right winger) – Scored a penalty and played regularly under Caixinha before joining Ipswich in July.

Kenny Miller (centre forward) – Started at centre forward ended up anywhere but at centre forward, last seen doing the same thing in Caixinha’s current squad.

Substitutes

Joe Garner (centre-forward) – Replaced Barrie McKay on 66 minutes and didn’t last much longer at Ibrox, joining Ipswich for £1million over the summer.

Joe Dodoo (centre-forward) – Took over from Martyn Waghorn with 13 minutes left; joined Charlton on deadline day in a season-long loan.

Harry Forrester (winger) – Got seven minutes after replacing Kenny Miller before leaving Ibrox to sign for AFC Wimbledon on loan.

In other Rangers news, the club made a last-gasp move to sign a £45,000-a-week striker who would have catapulted them to the league title.
