Callum Wilson sends message to Newcastle fans after ‘long-awaited’ development

Newcastle forward Callum Wilson took to social media to celebrate scoring his first goal in nearly a year in their 3-2 FA Cup win over Birmingham City on Saturday (February 8).

The 32-year-old scored Newcastle’s second and his first since the 4-1 Premier League win over Burnley at the end of last season as Eddie Howe’s side secured progression to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Birmingham took a surprise lead after just one minute through former Man United wonderkid Ethan Laird’s goal from a corner.

Joe Willock scored a controversial equaliser for Newcastle, with the entirety of the ball seemingly not having crossed the goal line.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, PGMOL chief, and ex-FIFA official Keith Hackett suggested the goal was given on the basis of “a guess” and couldn’t understand why goal-line technology was not in operation.

Wilson got his goal just four minutes after Willock, bungling the ball into the back of the net after a defensive miscommunication.

Midfielder Tomoki Iwata restored parity, but it wasn’t enough, and Willock got his second of the game to earn the win for the Premier League side.

Callum Wilson shares ‘amazing’ Newcastle United reveal

The striker has struggled with a back injury for the best part of a year, starting just one of his six games across all competitions, scoring one goal, and providing zero assists in his 150 minutes of action.

Football Insider revealed (December 22) that the club are still planning on letting Wilson go at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Wilson took to Instagram after the controversial win over Birmingham to say: “Felt good to be back out there with my team. Amazing support from you fans as usual! Another cup win and a long-awaited goal.”

Football Insider also revealed (February 7) that Newcastle are hoping to build upon their impressive season with a big summer transfer window.

Howe’s attention will return to the Premier League as they prepare for a trip to current title holders Man City on Saturday (February 15).
