Cameron Brannagan: Blackpool submit improved bid for Oxford United four-goal hero

Blackpool have made a beat-the-deadline bid for Oxford United midfielder Cameron Brannagan, Football Insider understands.

The 25-year-old has been a top target for Blackpool all of this month’s transfer window and Oxford have rejected multiple offers.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Blackpool are refusing to give up on Brannagan and have made an improved bid ahead of Monday night.

Brannagan has been outstanding for Oxford this season and set a new record at the weekend, scoring four penalties during their 7-2 thrashing of Gillingham.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (11 January) that Blackpool are refusing to give up on the midfielder and are preparing to offer centre-back Jordan Thorniley as a sweetener in a part-exchange deal.

Thorniley had been on a season-long loan at Oxford but has since been recalled to Bloomfield Road.

As revealed by this site (7 January), the U’s have also rejected a £500,000 bid for Brannagan in this winter transfer window.

Blackpool manager Neil Critchley is a big admirer of the centre-midfielder having worked with him during his time at Liverpool.

The Manchester-born ace came through the ranks at Anfield.

He made three league appearances for the Merseyside club during the 2016-17 campaign.

Brannagan has just 18 months remaining on his contract at the Kassam Stadium after penning new terms in August 2020.

He has netted eight goals in 28 games for Oxford this season.

The Thames Valley side sit comfortably within the League One play-off places as their promotion charge hots up.

Recently promoted Blackpool sit midtable in the Championship.

Currently 14th, Critchley’s side are 17 points clear of the relegation zone.

The transfer window shut at 11pm tonight.
