Campbell: This may be Real Reason Bamford extended Leeds contract in secret

Kevin Campbell has hailed Leeds United for their “great” decision to extend Patrick Bamford’s contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker heaped praise on the 27-year-old who has enjoyed an “exceptional season” for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein revealed last week that Leeds secretly extended Bamford’s contract last summer, meaning he is actually under contract at Elland Road beyond June 2022.

Football Insider understands the Whites are set to open talks with the centre-forward over a blockbuster new deal soon following an impressive Premier League campaign.

Bamford has proved his doubters this term wrong by contributing 15 goals and eight assists in his 36 appearances to date.

When asked by Football Insider why the club chose not to announce Bamford’s contract extension, Campbell said:“Maybe the club and Bamford did not see it as a big deal.

“It sounds to me as if there was a 12-month extension clause in his contract that just rolled in. That could be why there was no announcement.

“It is great that they have got him for another year anyway. I presume it was mutually agreed because Bamford has done exceptionally this season and he looks happy there.

“It doesn’t have to have bells and whistles on it. It is great business by both.”

One forward who’s time at Elland Road may be coming to an end is Tyler Roberts.

Football Insider understands the attacker, who has just one year left on his contract, has been tabled a new deal but is yet to sign amid interest from Newcastle United.
