Celtic issue emphatic response to bid from Premier League club – report
By Harvey Byrne
Celtic have turned down a bid for goalkeeper Craig Gordon from Premier League side Chelsea, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun have claimed on Thursday afternoon that the Scottish giants have rejected an offer from their English counterparts and that they do not want to sell.
The report follows on from claims from Sky Sports in their transfer blog on Thursday morning (10:57 am) stating that Chelsea were planning on making an offer for the 34-year-old.
It is believed that the Blues are now looking for a backup to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with current deputy Asmir Begovic looking likely to head to Bournemouth in a £12million deal.
However, the Hoops remain intent on keeping hold of their number one, who has starred in 34 appearances this season.
The shot stopper has been in excellent form, keeping 18 clean sheets and conceding just 25 from his encounters and he has been a big reason for why the Hoops are unbeaten in the Premiership this campaign.
Celtic have summer signing Dorus de Vries and Logan Bailly in their goalkeeper ranks, but neither are considered good enough to take the number one spot over from Gordon.
Football Insider verdict:
It is felt that Gordon is going to have to push a move away from Celtic if he is to make a transfer to Chelsea. The Scottish giants will be keen to ensure they keep hold of one of their key players, but Gordon could be tempted by a return to the Premier League and a final payday at a giant club. The goalkeeper will enter the final year of his contract in the summer and at his age he may seek financial gain rather than playing time. Chelsea will present a very attractive proposition for a number of players and Celtic fans must now hope that Gordon isn’t tempted by the bright lights of the Premier League.
