Frank McAvennie claims Kristoffer Ajer can shine if he swaps Celtic for Newcastle this summer.
The Celtic icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was reacting to the latest on Ajer’s future.
According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are considering an £8million move for the 23-year-old ahead of the transfer window opening.
Ajer has just 12 months left on his contract with the Hoops and it is likely the club will cash in this summer if he does not agree to sign a new deal.
This site understands Newcastle have between £8-£10million to spend on new players this summer.
Ajer made 31 Premiership appearances for Celtic during a disastrous 2020/21 campaign.
However, McAvennie claims 6ft 4in Ajer can shine at St James Park and Steve Bruce should play him as a midfielder.
“It could be what he needs,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“If there’s a profit to be made, he’ll be sold. He wants to challenge himself, he wants to go.
“Good luck to him. I think he’ll be doing a lot more defending at Newcastle than he does at Celtic.
“I’m not sure he’s the man for Newcastle. They need someone who will stand up and be counted.
“I honestly think he’s a midfield player. He’s wonderful on the ball. He goes by players like they aren’t there.
“Steve Bruce doesn’t have much hair but he’ll be pulling out what he has left if Ajer defends.
“I want him to go down there and surprise me. I want him to really shine. Playing in the Premier League is different, he might relish it.”
