Chris Sutton makes incendiary claim about Everton 23-year-old after Koeman comments

By Amir Mir

Chris Sutton has made an incendiary claim about Everton ace Ross Barkley by stating that he has been “tapped up” by a rival club.

The 23-year-old is yet to sign a new contract with the Toffees with manager Ronald Koeman warning him that he would be sold if he does not put pen to paper.

Barkley’s current deal at Goodison Park is due to expire in 2018 and with no new deal on the horizon, his future at the club has come into question.

Former Premier League winner Sutton, who pulls no punches when offering his views, gave his thoughts on the Barkley situation.

“What has happened really is that he has been tapped up,” Sutton told BBC Radio Five Live. “I reckon he has been tapped up and that is why there is a situation over this contract.”

It would be quite shocking if Barkley has been “tapped up” because it would mean another team or individual has contacted him to try and persuade him to make a transfer without the permission of the club – something that is against the rules in football.

England international Barkley isn’t the only player at the club who has not signed a new deal, with striker Romelu Lukaku also in the same boat.

The Premier League’s top scorer openly stated that he will not sign a new contract with the club as his future has also come into question.

Nonetheless, both Barkley and Lukaku were on song for Everton on Sunday afternoon when they helped Koeman secure a 4-2 win over Leicester.

Lukaku bagged a brace during that game, including Barkley providing him with a brilliant cross which he duly converted with his head in the first half.

Now, they will be looking to continue that partnership for the Toffees as they welcome Burnley to Goodison Park this Saturday.

In other Everton news, Ian Wright has backed the club to sign this talented Premier League ace.
