Christiansen makes big admission about Wood as Leeds inundated with bids

By Harry Sykes

Thomas Christiansen has admitted that Chris Wood’s head could have been turned by the attempts of Premier League clubs to sign him this month.

The Leeds United manager made the big admission in the wake of his side’s 0-0 draw against Fulham on Tuesday night as the player and team failed to score for the second consecutive match.

Wood’s future has come under the microscope in recent days amid strong interest from top-flight clubs, led by Burnley, who have set their sights on the Leeds spearhead after selling Andre Gray to Watford for £18million.

Sean Dyche’s side tabled a £20million bid that for the New Zealand international on Tuesday morning that was knocked back by the Championship promotion hopefuls, while Brighton and West Brom have also submitted offers of £14million.

“Of course it can influence (Wood’s thinking) a little bit, like all players when they speak about you,” said Christiansen after Leeds’ draw against Fulham, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post. “If they speak about the Premier League then that’s much more pressure but I believe he’ll score again soon.”

Wood spurned two good chances against Fulham as he and his team drew a blank for the second time in four days.

Some supporters were critical of the club’s prize asset on social media, claiming his head had been turned by the transfer interest, while others hit out at fans who were piling into a player who topped the Championship goal charts last season and represents the club’s best hope of promotion.

Christiansen added to the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I don’t know about the bids. I’m not listening to them. I’m just focused on Chris on the pitch.

“When he plays, he tries to do his best. If it’s right that we have these offers, because I don’t want to listen, then the president (Andrea Radrizzani) and Victor (sporting director Victor Orta) can talk about it.”

Wood is a wanted man following a brilliant 2016-17 campaign in which he scored 30 goals in all competitions, 27 of which came in the Championship.

In his last 53 matches for Leeds, the forward has netted an impressive 31 times.
