Dan Ashworth set for arbitration as Man United move ‘gets ugly’ – O’Rourke

Dan Ashworth will face arbitration to seal his exit from Newcastle to join Man United as the situation begins to get “ugly”.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke explained that the sporting director has claimed that he was sacked rather than resigned, as he was placed on gardening leave in February.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have claimed Ashworth was ‘tapped up’ by Man United before the club were aware of their interest in tempting him away.

Dougie Freedman had been the early tip to take over from the 53-year-old before he turned down the offer to remain at Crystal Palace, as revealed by Football Insider.

Now, Football Insider has reported that the club are closing in on a deal for Johannes Spors to become their new sporting director.

Man United are said to be confident that Ashworth will join them this summer, and are closing in on finalising his appointment, which would be made smoother by the appointment of his replacement at St James’ Park.

The two clubs have been embroiled in a row over compensation since he agreed terms with United – and it has been widely reported that Newcastle are demanding up to £20million.

The Magpies are said to be standing firm in their demands and will not accept a lower fee for the transfer guru, throwing the deal into question.

Man United, meanwhile, are keen to appoint Ashworth before the transfer window opens as they plan a radical overhaul of their playing squad.

The Red Devils finished 8th in the Premier League, and bottom of their Champions League group, but qualified for Europe courtesy of victory in the FA Cup final.

The arrival of Ashworth is seen as key to their transfer activity, which will be boosted by their European qualification, but continued delays have caused concern on both sides.

In other news, Man United could sign two Chelsea stars early in the transfer window.
