Dave King will be salivating – Sutton delivers verdict on one potential Rangers deal
Chris Sutton has claimed that Rangers chairman Dave King will be “salivating” over the thought of Steven Gerrard taking over at Rangers.
Talking in the Scottish Sun, Sutton claims that the Ibrox hierarchy haven’t given one thought to the long-term implications of the appointment and that it’s pure “short-termism” that will end in disaster.
“It’s great PR. Dave King would be salivating,” said Sutton.
“The TV channels would be blasting out about the club non-stop and the punters would flock to the stadium.
“Season tickets would fly off the shelves, scarves and jerseys with Gerrard’s image all over them would be out of stock within a day.
“The tills would be ringing off the hook and King would get the coffers filled again for another season.

“But then what? It goes wrong again and they are left trying to find another manager by Christmas.”
Football Insider verdict:
Sutton has got one thing right here – Gerrard would be a sensational deal for Rangers that will bring in a lot of eyeballs and money to Ibrox. That’s got to be a good thing. As for the long-term future? Gerrard has a lot to prove but he’ll be bringing in experience with him. And if he can attract the right calibre of player, with proven Premier League performers like Scott Arfield already on the way in, he could do what other Rangers managers haven’t. Maybe Sutton is more worried about the long-term than he would care to admit?
